I doubled in English and History during undergrad, but developed a passion for political, social, and continental philosophy. Since I lack the undergrad. work and would not feel confident or secure going into a Ph.D. program, an M.A. seems best for me. An abstract also doesn't strike me as necessary unless your writing sample is an excerpt from a longer piece and you want them to get a sense of what the entire piece covers. Par contre, I recommend an abstract because it gives a sense of what the entire piece covers even if the piece is short. Aug 17, 2020 · How plausible is it to be accepted to a legit Philosophy PhD coming from a different undergraduate field, but with lots of past philosophical content/exposure and substantial self-study and writing. Say, English but with an emphasis on continental, politics with an emphasis on political philosoph... Lets just say both these individuals are the two brightest minds I've ever met in philosophy- and one didn't even get funding. I don't know the numbers but it is extremely difficult to get into the dphil there. 25 of us at our masters program (the 2nd ranked philo grad program in the UK) and only 2 got in for the dphil.

You'll also want to contact both departments well in advance of applying. There are lots of other programs that integrate philosophy and psychology. UCSD has a cognitive science interdisciplinary program, and PITTs HPS has a specialization in psychology. NYU and Rutgers are also strong in psych / philosophy. Good luck!
