The benefit to having a vassal is the research agreement. The more you have, the faster you can keep up on tech. If you have three vassals, that's three "small" civilizations offering discounts on techs you don't have yet. One researches a tech, you get a discount. you research it, the other two get a discount.

There is one huge difference it has with vassalization. Any AI you vassalize is immediately reduced to Ensign difficulty regardless of what difficulty you are actually playing on. This makes vassals completely useless on higher difficulty settings. The Hegemony doesn't do this, making it the only usable options on higher difficulties. Only counter is to be aggressive early on but that limit play style. I usually (if not playing genocidal empire) starts building up economy and then go to war but then it might be to late. Potential reasons: Easier to win vassalize wars by occupation than to go through claiming all of the AI's systems and win claim wars. Status quo vassalization doesn't require claims either, just occupation. Their planets aren't valuable to you. You don't want to manage more planets. You want an AI to do work for you.
