The standalone is for people who have played the mod and are ready to "move ahead" and help shape the game to what it aims to be, the reason it's so popular is all the people who have already played and loved the mod "went on" with the Standalone. Overall standalone is much better imo. You can enter buildings, many more items, inventory is better, graphics are better, sounds are better, etc. What the mod really does better is set the atmosphere. When playing the mod it just feels like something isn't right, in a good way.

I obviously know the technical differences between a mod and a standalone. The biggest thing for me is the movement. You have more freedom than you realize in standalone, in the mod it is a struggle to move around with precision. The mod feels more robotic, like you have to do one thing at a time.
