Lefever sideplate serial numbers start at 5000 and end somewhere in the mid 74XXX range. Anything over 100,000 is a Nitro Special made by Ithaca and is a completely different gun . The best place to find the serial number will be on the water table.

I own a Lefever Nitro Special. In particular one from 1928. Its in 12 gauge instead of 16. The 16 gauge wont draw the same premium. The 12 has 2 3/4 chambers, the 16's had 2 9/16. They're a good gun, a less thrills version of what was to become the Ithaca NID. The action will take modern smokeless loads, the wood stock may not.
