Oncology isn’t a residency, it’s a fellowship. You have to match into and complete residency in IM first and then apply for fellowship through another match process just the same as you would for residency. So it’s a 6 year path- 3 years IM and 3 years heme/onc. It has become very competitive due to the relatively good lifestyle.

One thing that really helped me was to get a blank piece of paper and draw out the blood cell lineages from hematopoietic stem cell all the way down to erythrocytes, platelets, plasma cells, etc. Once I had that, I continued to draw lines to the cancers that can come from that cell type and a few high yield facts about each.
