You can't cast spells and your attack rolls, saving throws and ability checks have disadvantage, if you wear armor without proficiency. You don't get any bonus from wearing non magical boots and gloves, but many gloves and boots are magical.

Weirdly, its actually better to take moderately armored than to take heavy armor feat because dwarves don't get proficiency with a shield and the heavy armor feat doesn't give it while moderately armored does so you can take moderately armored and get +2 ac from wearing a shield vs +1 AC from wearing plate instead of half plate.There are no drawbacks or penalties to casting while in armor, provided you are proficient.
