The sale of Marlin Firearms was completed right around Christmas 2007. All rifles produced in 2008, 2009, and 2010 were made by Marlin employees, on Marlin machinery. Only the paychecks were from Remington Outdoor Products. Spring of 2010, the last of the JM marked rifles left Connecticut Marlin.

Someone messed up. And it wasn't considered enough of an issue to junk the barrel. It is a cosmetic defect only, and serves to make your 336 distinctive. There is no functional problem. My first Marlin was a birch stocked 30AS, and my 30TK is birch if I recall. I miss the bullseye on them, but the guns shoot just fine. I think you came out great in the trade.
