Using a fender washer with wings bent in and a 2 inch bolt/nut, you can make a runner for a wire handle. Allows you to use your top step and still easily reach your stick for the next move up...I usually carry 3 hawk helium climbing sticks with me. I am looking for ways to cut weight since I am often doing alot more hiking than I am actually hunting in some cases. The Heliums have 2 pegs on each step, so to speak, One on each side. so 6 pegs on each climbing stick.

When you remove your strap the bolt you use to create your button will go through the same hole. Now that I think about it I think it was a 1/4" bolt. If you make your own spacers be sure they are the right length so the rope binds as you put weight on your steps. I am using 7mm rope. It does seem to stretch a bit.Wrap the strap around the tree and then slide the closest adapting loop over the Versa button. At this point it should be attached to the tree and will be a bit loose. Pull out the top two steps and pull them down with some pretty good force to seat the legs into the tree and put tension on the strap.
